We are Obscura
Obscura is an artist, activist, and independent grassroots scholar based in Central Queensland on Darumbal land. She advocates for Trans, Mad, and Neurodivergent liberation with a particular interest in Plurality.
Her artwork engages with place, struggle, and identity. Instead of seeking to capture the thing itself, she seeks to capture the moments in-between. Her photography tends to display themes of alienation and animal interaction with human environments. Obscura's work often employs silhouette or high contrast, both in lighting and irony. She first picked up a camera in 2019 and has placed highly in several photography competitions since then.
Obscura performed with the UQ Taiko Japanese Drumming Team for many years since its humble beginnings in 2014. She quickly became part of the main performance team and specialised in the shinobue (traditional Japanese transverse flute). The venues and audiences ranged from frequent workshops at primary schools, to entertainment for the Japanese Consulate in Brisbane and high-powered corporate events around Queensland.
During her time with the Taiko Team, Obscura made many connections with the traditional Japanese music scene around Brisbane. Always keen to give something a go, she studied under various teachers and learnt to play the Shakuhachi (Chikuho and Kinko schools), Shinobue, Koto, Taiko, and has dabbled with the Nohkan. She is a member of the Australian Shakuhachi Society and the Queensland Koto Society.
Obscura also spends time providing emotional and occasionally spiritual support for members of her communities. She has volunteered with The Plural Association since 2021, hosting regular online meetups in a time zone more accessible to Plurals from Australia and New Zealand. She is also a member of The Refractory.
Obscura's main academic interests are in Transfeminism, Mad Studies, Critical Neurodiversity, Esotericism, and Neuroqueering. She holds a bachelor of Arts/Science with majors in Physics, Maths, and Logic and Philosophy of Science.
“I am the silence never found
And the idea infinitely recalled
I am the voice whose sound is manifold
And the word whose appearance is multiple.
I am the utterance of my name.”
